SOCIAL MEDIA ALGORITHMS

How Do They Help or Hurt Artists?

Social Media & Algorithms

With the rise and development of social media platforms artists, too, have evolved their craft and adapted to this online environment to connect with followers and fans of their works. But due to the ever changing nature of social media and their algorithms, artists are forced to figure out how to first gain exposure to this audience and maintain them. Some researchers have suggested artists make use of traditional and social media marketing strategies to build their presence, while current online artists have words of advice based on their personal experiences.

About the Project

This project was conducted to see what it would be like for an artist to build and maintain an audience with a fresh account on Instagram, specifically looking at which types of posts were the most “successful” in terms of engagement and exposure to non-followers.  Data was collected to measure engagement (likes, comments, shares, and bookmarks) and reach (followers and non-followers) for both regular photo posts and Reels to draw a comparison of success between the two. Throughout the duration of posting, personal observations were also made to make note of any possible reasonings behind the success of certain postings whether they were regular photo posts or Reels.
